Immersive Exhibits
With the capabilities of immersive technology, the Museum of Science is creating programs, presentations, and exhibits that can adapt at the speed of science. While these experiences exist digitally, they are designed to engage both visitors’ minds and bodies. And because digital immersive experiences are becoming increasingly common in museums, we’ve partnered with other institutions to share content and achieve a collective impact greater than any museum could accomplish alone.
In the Museum’s Blue Wing, our Programs team has been testing the capabilities of our existing immersive room and developing interactive programs where visitors can use movement and touch to transform the space around them. One example is Science Adventure: Deep Ocean Dive, which uses real footage from science expeditions aboard the ship E/V Nautilus, including underwater robot explorations. Visitors can currently experience a version of this interactive program at the Gordon Current Science & Technology Stage.

We’re also exploring how immersive technology can enhance presentations—such as placing visitors inside an animal’s habitat and displaying supplementary visuals during a live animal program. One of our favorite testing moments was when a young visitor stretched out along a life-size projection of an anaconda to see how he measured up.
These tests are preparing us for the completion of the Blue Wing renovation. The new space will feature technology that enables immersive experiences engaging multiple senses — and can change not just day-to-day, but multiple times in a single day!

Meanwhile, the Museum has helped found The Alliance for Immersion in Museums (AIM), a coalition of museums and media producers from around the world. AIM’s goal is to establish high standards, create shared specifications, and maintain a commitment to experiences that are accessible, interactive, engaging, and dynamic.
AIM envisions a future where museums leverage digital immersive technologies to enhance visitor experiences, foster learning, and share content across institutions — driving innovation in the museum field. Experience the power of this technology here at Science Park by visiting our immersive room!
